A Cairo, IL man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on weapons charges after a traffic stop.

The Paducah Police Department says 42-year-old Cleyon R. Tanner was arrested at around 2:30 p.m. after a traffic stop near Fountain and Park Avenue.

Police said detectives and another vehicle had to drive around a vehicle blocking the road on North 12th Street. Detectives turned around to speak to the driver, who left the area and headed down 12th Street. Detectives stopped the vehicle after it crossed the centerline several times.

During a search of the vehicle, detectives reportedly found a loaded handgun with a 30 round magazine that had been reported stolen from a vehicle in 2016. Tanner was arrested and charged with careless driving, stopping on a limited access highway, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and receiving a stolen firearm.

Tanner has previous convictions for assaults, auto theft, drug trafficking and firearm possession. He was arrested in January on charges of second-degree assault (domestic violence) and being a persistent felon, and in June on three counts of first-degree trafficking cocaine.
