In a press release, the city said the Ohio River level was 48.12 feet at noon on Thursday, with the National Weather Service predicting it would stay near that level for several days.
City Engineer Rick Murphy said, “We are on high alert...we are closely watching each forecast. A river stage forecast showing the Ohio River rising to 49 feet or higher would require the city to move into action and begin gate installation.”
Just in case, city workers have been doing some preliminary work at the gates, such as removing the plates and cleaning the sills at the Kentucky Avenue and Harrison Street gates. They have also moved some heavy equipment into place so it would be ready, if needed.

Most of the city's pump stations have already been in use, with the first one operating when the river reached 27.5 feet.
Floodgates were last installed 366 days ago, on February 19, 2019.
