Paducah Independent Schools are asking for the public's help in providing assistance to students affected by homelessness.

People are invited to bring items and donate them at the Central Office at 800 Caldwell Street and leave them at the Tornado Tree. Each of the 100 ornaments on the tree represents a student impacted by homelessness.

Specific items being requested are gift cards, alarm clocks, small lotions, chapstick, deodorant, combs, brushes, packaged underwear, gloves, hats, laundry bags and detergent, and middle/high school backpacks.

Heather Anderson, the McKinney-Vento Liaison, said students come to her office with needs that can't be met at home, and she will use the resources she has to go purchase them.  She said they also need nonperishable foods like canned chicken and tuna, soups, Spaghetti-os, ravioli, and ramen.

Anderson said "We have students and families who live in some of the local hotels and they don't have access to a stove."

She said that food items that can be microwaved or are ready to eat are especially needed.

For more information about how you can help, contact Heather Anderson at 270-556-8017 or heather.anderson@paducah.kyschools.us.
