Two people have been arrested on charges related to the alleged abuse of an elderly woman.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department began investigating on July 19 after the 91-year-old woman told family members she had been assaulted on July 15. The victim told detectives that 47-year-old Lance Carter assaulted her during an argument while they were cooking in her kitchen. Detectives say Carter and his wife, 25-year-old Rebecca Carter, who was hired to be a live-in caregiver, immediately knew the woman needed medical care, so they took her to a hospital and told her to tell medical staff that she had fallen down some stairs.

With the help of family members, deputies were able to find the Carters at a local convenience store. Lance was arrested without incident, and Rebecca was arrested after a brief foot chase and struggle. Detectives say she ran because she was wanted on an arrest warrant from Illinois.

Rebecca Carter faces charges of resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police on foot 2nd degree, assault of an officer 3rd degree, criminal mischief 3rd degree, and failure to report abuse of an adult. She was also arrested as a fugitive from another state.

Lance Carter was charged with wanton endangerment 1st degree and assault 4th degree.

They were both taken to McCracken County Jail.
