The former treasurer of a local endowment fund was in court on embezzlement charges Thursday.

According to the McCracken District Court Clerk, 58-year-old Danny W. Fugate was waived his arraignment on a charge of theft by unlawful taking (more than $10,000). His case was bound over to a McCracken County Grand Jury, which will hear the case on May 17.

Fugate was arrested in January after board members of the McCracken County Community Career Endowment told police they suspected money had been taken from the fund, which provides scholarships for African-American students.

Fugate was suspended from his job with the city of Paducah upon his arrest and later retired. He had worked for the city since 1987.
