Nominated by Paducah Middle School, Smith received a medal and certificate from Cindy Byrd, member of the Paducah chapter of the DAR, for his contributions to his community. Smith regularly leads the Pledge of Allegiance at the Paducah City Commission meetings.
The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal was established to foster a greater appreciation of the qualities of American citizenship among schoolchildren. Schools and service organizations may nominate one student per grade in grades 5-11.
“Gavin enjoys finding ways in which he can serve his community. He was especially invested in the recent local elections attending the open forums, learning all he could about the candidates and their platforms,” said Paducah Middle School teacher Lynnette Harris. “I can tell by his investment in the community that he will grow up to be civically-minded young man. He is always seeking ways to get involved and give back. It is wonderful that his efforts are being recognized by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I expect great things from this young man.”
Smith is in the band and choir at Paducah Middle. He attends church at Lone Oak First Baptist where he is active in the youth group and children's church. He has been active at MainStage School of Performing Arts since he was four, taking lessons in music, drama, musical theater and dance. He is the son of Eric and Kristy Lewis.
