Last fall, five McCracken schools applied for Lowe's Toolbox for Education grants. This spring, all five found out the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation would be sending them a $5,000 check.

Heath Elementary's and Lone Oak Intermediate's Toolbox grants will both fund performing arts improvements and equipment; Heath Middle's grant will fund greenhouse improvements; Reidland Elementary's grant will fund a vegetable garden and entryway landscaping; and Reidland Middle's grant will fund library renovations and improvements.

In her efforts to transform the LOIS music room, music teacher Beth Palmer also enlisted the help of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which granted LOIS an additional $6,000 this school year for music and arts-related projects. Reidland Middle also received a $5,000 grant from the TeleTech Community Foundation for a set of 20 Chromebooks for students to use in their library.

"Grants like these are a great chance for schools to tackle projects they simply couldn't otherwise," said Genevieve Postlethwait, MCPS grant writer. "We're lucky to have such actively involved and generous local businesses who step in to support our schools."

Including the Lowe's, RMHC and TTEC grants, McCracken County Schools received over $500,000 competitive grants during the 2018-19 school year, including national, state and local awards.
