The 'Great Shakeout' national earthquake drill took place Thursday, providing individuals, schools, organizations, and governments a chance to practice taking cover.

According to their website, "Many areas of the globe are prone to earthquakes. You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, at school or even on vacation. Are you prepared to survive and to recover quickly? Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are an opportunity to practice how to be safer during earthquakes: 'Drop, Cover and Hold On.' ShakeOut also has been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to update emergency plans and supplies, and to secure your space in order to prevent damage and injuries."

West Kentucky Star spoke with the Director of the McCracken County Emergency Management, Jerome Mansfield, who provided some earthquake safety tips, "The three earthquake protection actions to take, we ask people to remember to drop, cover, and hold on. Drop to the ground and cover your head, hold on to a stationary object, protect yourself until the shaking stops."

Across the world approximately 66 million people participated in the 2019 Shakeout.
