Paducah's Greenway Trail project will be getting a big boost in funding from the federal government.

Governor Steve Beshear Wednesday announced $403,156 in federal funding for the fifth phase of the project.  The fifth phase continues east from the newly constructed boat ramp near Madison and Monroe streets along the Paducah Riverfront, ending at Jefferson Street.

The city of Paducah will put $100,789 of its local funding toward the cost of the project.

The Greenway Trail is a system of multi-use byways for non-motorized commuters and pedestrians connecting residents to Paducah’s downtown historic commercial district.

The funding is through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program. TAP is a federally funded reimbursement program administered by the Office of Local Programs in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid. TAP assists communities in funding transportation improvements such as safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities, scenic routes, beautification and other investments.
