McCracken County Clerk Julie Griggs has shared a few more details about the primary election in June.
Griggs told West Kentucky Star her office is busy mailing ballots or ballot requests to those who have contacted them. She said absentee ballots and early voting are nothing new for her office, but the closure of precincts and use of the courthouse for in-person voting on election day will be a new experience, and they are getting prepared.
Between June 8-22, voters can come to the County Clerk's office on Monday through Saturday to vote between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. No appointment is necessary.
On election day, June 23, most offices in the courthouse will be closed to focus on the election, and multiple voting stations will be available between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. There could be as many as 100 voting stations on multiple floors in the building.
Griggs said, "That will be the only polling location open on election day, so if voters want to come in and vote in person on election day, they have to come to the courthouse. Since we've never done it this way before, we really have no way of knowing how many people will want to come in and vote that way, but I want to make people aware that if they do choose to vote on election day that there could be some long lines."
To avoid that potential wait, Griggs also suggests using GoVoteKY.com to request a ballot by June 15, which would be mailed to the voter's home. Once completed, the ballot can be mailed back or brought to the courthouse by June 23. A locked dropbox is available in the courthouse lobby for those who don't want to mail their ballot.
To allow for ballots postmarked June 23 to be received, Griggs said the state board of election has allowed a few extra days to tabulate the votes.
Griggs said they have, "Until 6:00 pm on June 27. Hopefully, we'll have our numbers here in McCracken County before that, but that's the longest that it would be."
She said policies for absentee voting and dates for in-person voting should be the same in all Kentucky Counties, but people living outside McCracken County should get other details like times and locations from their county clerk.
