Jackson Purchase has released a statement regarding the use of energy in its facilities, as well as the increase in price for customers' power bills.

Here is the complete statement:

The leadership here at Jackson Purchase Energy is committed to providing safe and reliable electric service to our consumer-members at the lowest cost possible. Following continual increases in the cost of doing business, Jackson Purchase Energy had to initiate a request to make a small increase in the customer charge in order to continue doing what matters most - providing safe and reliable power.

Through a new, streamlined process created for smaller adjustments to electricity rates, the Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved Jackson Purchase Energy’s first base rate increase in 11 years.

Under the PSC order, Jackson Purchase Energy’s monthly residential customer charge will increase from $12.45 to $16.40. Small commercial customers will see the monthly customer charge increase from $13.86 to $16.40. However, the per-unit cost of electricity is not changing.

According to the PSC, for a typical residential customer, the change represents about a 3% increase in the average bill. Though this is a relatively small increase by industry standards, Jackson Purchase Energy is committed to providing answers to any questions or concerns by our membership.

Before Jackson Purchase Energy filed its request, an independent cost-of-service study concluded that the actual fixed cost of serving a residential consumer-member could justify a monthly customer charge of $30.23. Jackson Purchase Energy requested a much lower increase.

“Any rate increase is difficult, especially for our consumer-members, and is something we do only when absolutely necessary in order to cover the cost of doing business,” said Jackson Purchase Energy President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Grissom.  “This revenue will help us continue to keep our electric service safe and reliable while we persist in exploring every opportunity to help lessen the rate increase's effect on our consumer-members.”

Jackson Purchase Energy first announced its rate request in March, explaining that it is necessary in order to protect our consumer-members’ access to safe, efficient and reliable energy.
