A LaCenter man was arrested after allegedly cashing checks belonging to an individual who passed away earlier in the week.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department was notified on Thursday that a possible fraudulent check had been presented at a local Regions Bank. Detectives met with bank employees and learned that a male had cashed a personal check on Wednesday and had returned to cash another personal check on Thursday.  Both checks had been written from the same account and for the same amount of money.

Detectives identifed the suspect as 25-year-old Jerry Lee Campbell of LaCenter.  After contacting one of the account holders, it was confirmed that Campbell did not have permission to access the account, and that the forged checks contained the signature of the account holder who had passed away on Monday.

Campbell was served arrest warrants by Ballard County deputies on Friday afternoon. He was interviewed at the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, where he allegedly admitted to his involvement in the crime.

Campbell was charged with two counts of second degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Additional charges may be forthcoming.

He was lodged in the McCracken County Jail.
