Want to help a family in need? Lourdes Hospice is looking for compassionate volunteers who can offer a quiet and comforting presence at the bedside of someone in their final hours.

“These specially trained volunteers offer reassurance and support to family members who may be feeling overwhelmed and discouraged,” says Susan Mason, Lourdes Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. “No special background or experience is required to volunteer with Lourdes Hospice, just a desire to make a difference in someone’s life,  provide a valuable service to the communities we serve, and at the same time be part of a dynamic and dedicated team.”

After completing training, volunteers provide an array of services; such as respite for the caregiver, playing soft music, or reading an inspirational story to a patient. Lourdes Hospice also needs office volunteers to assist in mailing, copying, or to run errands.

Vangie Shaper has been a Hospice volunteer for 16 years. “To be there with the family and providing a compassionate presence, lending a steady shoulder to lean on in this uncertain time, and grieving together with the family, lifting the load in some small way, has given me many rewards in life,” says Shaper.

The next training session is scheduled for Monday, May 19 from 5pm-9pm and Tuesday May 20th 5pm-9pm at Lourdes North Plaza, 911 Joe Clifton Drive in Paducah.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Susan Mason at (270) 415-3640.
