Business owner Amanda Hill says she and her husband, who have purchased a van to drive for the popular online ridesharing app, had been working with the company for about four months before they got the good news. She says initially they were turned down.
"Me and my husband have opened a business in Paducah. We decided to purchase a vehicle in order to do Lyft. We announced doing Lyft and we were told that it was not available in the area. We have been working with Lyft in order to get Lyft to come to Paducah, and today we got the notification that it is now available." Hill said.
Hill says she isn't yet sure how much the service will cost in Paducah, but she is confident it will be significantly less than the previous options available in the area. Drivers can work independently, or can sign up under another driver for an added bonus. There will likely be a limit on the number of drivers that can sign up in the area, but Hill says there will be plenty of opportunity for motivated drivers.
"I see it bringing in jobs to Paducah. I see it helping people who don't have cars, people who can't get around. I just see it benefitting in all directions." Hill said.
Paducah City Commissioners passed a new ordinance in February that allowed online ridesharing services to operate in the city. Now that Lyft has opened up in our area Hill says it will mean more choices for people who need transportation.
"They said that Paducah was not big enough. They stated that there were not enough big events that go on in Paducah," Hill said. "We just stressed to them that no matter how big or small we are people are here who need rides, who need to get to work, who need to go home from a night out. It doesn't matter how little we are, as long people support us that's all that matters."
