A Mayfield man has been arrested on handgun and fraudulent firearms charges after an investigation.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department, on Wednesday officers were contacted by detectives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about a suspicious firearms transaction that had taken place at a local business.

Officers say that while investigating, it was discovered that 52-year-old James H. Payne of Graves County was acting suspiciously while directing an elderly woman to buy a firearm. According to officers, Payne wouldn't directly touch the firearm or ammunition, and made comments that seemed odd for a lawful firearms transaction.

A short time later, officers stopped Payne's vehicle and spoke with him. While investigating, officers discovered that Payne is a convicted felon. According to officers, Payne admitted to trying to get other people to purchase firearms for him.

Payne was taken to the McCracken County Jail and charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and fraudulent firearms transaction.
