A local domestic crisis center is set to receive more than $1.4 million in federal grant money.

The Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet has announced it will distribute more than $26 million in federal grant money to various programs across the commonwealth to assist victims of violent crime.

The funds come from two federal grant programs – the Victims of Crime Act and the STOP Violence Against Women Act. The cabinet is awarding $25.2 million in VOCA money to 116 Kentucky programs, including those focused on child advocacy, domestic violence, sexual assault, law enforcement, prosecutor-based advocacy and legal aid, among other services. An additional $1.3 million in VAWA funds will go to support victim services, prosecutors, law enforcement, and court-based programs.

Mary Foley, Merryman House Executive Director, told West Kentucky Star, "these funds will allow us to bring on seven additional positions, which will bring our staff up to 47. It will also help offset overhead cost with the outreach offices and expenses such as rent, client transportation, emergency hotel stays, clothing, and emergency food."

The Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center in Paducah is among the recipients included in the program, and will get more than $1.4 million in grant money.
