Just as students and teachers are getting comfortable at the new McCracken County High School, finishing touches are underway at the athletic complex.

The new high school’s athletic assets include a 3,300-seat gymnasium, 3,500-seat football stadium, eight-court tennis complex, 750-seat soccer stadium, 1,500-seat baseball and softball fields, track and field facilities and an indoor practice complex.

The Paducah Sun reports that, according to Kris Garrett, McCracken County High School athletic director, the district along with the football and soccer booster clubs are on schedule to add two practice fields to the list by next summer.

Garrett says, a partnership between the high school and two booster clubs is allowing ongoing work on practice fields located north of Marquette Stadium.

At the time, crews are focused on grading and sloping the fields to allow proper irrigation and drainage. That involves monitoring and tailoring excess water away from the surface with out the risk of damage.

Garrett said, the booster clubs are working along side crews to install water lines and a sprinkler system on the field. They are also seeding both fields.

Although too much of the season has passed to plant Bermuda grass, Superintendent Nancy Waldrop says, the irrigation of the fields from an underground well allows for easy planting in the spring.

Waldrop said, as a result of the booster club’s help, the school district doesn’t have an additional financial burden to irrigate the practice fields.

Until competition of the practice fields, expected next year, the Mustangs football team will continue using the playing fields for practice.
