Steve Vasseur, a local insurance salesman, recently spoke with West Kentucky Star about the proposed tax.
"It is really unfair. I've been selling insurance in McCracken county for 40 years. There's so many factors in determining a person's auto insurance right, and home insurance right. Each person's situation is different," Vasseur said.
He says there are lots of things the Fiscal Court isn't considering with the proposed tax that would lead to additional fees the taxpayer would have to take on.
"The insurance companies collect that tax, and they also get a fee for collecting that tax. Just a lot of factors involved that you cannot control." Vasseur continued, "Then they're proposing a 6.9% tax on top of it, so you're automatically going to get a rate increase. On a homeowners policy usually your premium will go up every year anywhere from two to three percent because of replacement costs, the cost of building materials, and the cost of labor. When they do that, they will increase your coverage on your home insurance."
Vasseur closed by encouraging everyone to either attend the meeting, or call to voice their concern.
He said, "They're going to be talking about the insurance premium tax and they want public input, so I encourage everyone to call them at 270-444-4707 and tell them that you're not for this tax. Let's fight to keep this insurance premium tax off our insurance bill."
The meeting will take place at 1:30 pm at the McCracken County Courthouse in Courtroom C.
