A Tennessee man is facing a charge of attempted murder after hitting a pedestrian.

According to the Paducah Police Department, 43-year-old Robert Thomas Aitken was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly hitting a pedestrian in a stolen van.

Aitken was initially charged with second-degree assault, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia, second-degree fleeing or evading police, third-degree terroristic threatening, driving with a suspended or revoked license, and receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more).

Detectives interviewed Aitken on Monday, where he allegedly told officers that he had intentionally hit 68-year-old James G. Cates with the van he was driving, with the goal of killing Cates or knocking him unconscious so he could rob Cates.
