Former McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry has died, after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says 60-year-old Newberry was traveling south on Old Cairo Road shortly before noon Thursday when an SUV driven by 68-year-old Willie G. Holsapple of Paducah hit him. Deputies said Holsapple told them he was passing Newberry and it appeared as if Newberry moved from the shoulder to the roadway.

Newberry was thrown from the bicycle and suffered trauma to his head and chest. Other drivers arrived at the scene and began CPR. Emergency medical personnel continued trying to revive him until arrival at Lourdes Hospital, where Newberry was pronounced dead. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Newberry was a former county engineer who won election as County Judge-Executive in 2006 and was re-elected in 2010.
