A local church youth group is going to get a taste of what it's like to be homeless this weekend.

The youth group of Milburn Chapel Church is participating in "Box City" this weekend on their church parking lot, while they raise awareness of homelessness in our area and nationwide.

The students will be going to River City Mission Friday night to help feed the homeless that are there, and then will return to the church at 8:30 pm. After they arrive, they will be dependent on outside sources for food, clothing, and shelter. They will stay in cardboard boxes or whatever is available, eat food that is brought to them, and wear coats that are given to them. Any coats, blankets, or other items they use to stay warm will be donated to charities that help the homeless. At 7:30 am Saturday morning, their experience will end.

Unfortunately for many, this lifestyle is an everyday reality. Several shelters in Paducah house those who have nowhere else to go. Their situations and reasons vary, but they need help.

Milburn Chapel's youth group will be accepting coats, blankets and pillows, along with non-perishable food. All of these items will go to local food pantries and shelters. If you would like to help them (and the ones who really need it), donations can be brought to the church, which is located at 3760 Metropolis Lake Road in West Paducah. It's near the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and Metropolis Lake Road, about 5 minutes from Kentucky Oaks Mall.
