A Metropolis man was charged with DUI after crashing near a senior living facility on Friday.

A Metropolis Police Officer was dispatched to Southgate Senior Living on W. 10th Street for a minor crash. Officers said 76-year-old Lester R. Smith had driven into the ditch while attempting to turn into the parking lot. He then reportedly struck the mailbox under the awning at the entrance to the facility and almost struck the front door before he pulled forward and struck a parked vehicle.

The officer said Smith had urinated in his pants, had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, slurred speech and other signs of impairment.

Smith was arrested and charged with DUI and DUI with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more. He was released on a notice to appear.
