The 31-year-old first-year-coach was arrested after a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning, and has been suspended from his job until further notice.
According to a press release, Carbondale Police responded about 2:00 am to the intersection of West Grand and South Illinois Avenue, where a vehicle had reportedly struck a light pole. Police say witnesses followed the vehicle and saw it hit a parked vehicle at the intersection of South Illinois and West Cherry Street.
The police report says Overstreet was impaired at the scene, and was found in possession of narcotics and controlled substances, but did not have a prescription. He received minor injuries in one or both of the collisions, but police did not give additional details.
Overstreet was in Carbondale because the St. Mary Vikings were playing in a holiday tournament at SIU Arena.
WSIL reports that Overstreet's preliminary hearing in Jackson County is set for January 21.
In a Sunday press release, St. Mary School Systems Director Eleanor Spry said Overstreet has been suspended and Chase Denson has been named interim coach.
