As the remnants of tropical depression Cindy move slowly up the Mississippi River, creeks and streams are reaching bankful in many locations. Flooding may be imminent in many low-lying areas, especially in southern Illinois where rains have persisted since late last night. Over three inches has already fallen west of Carbondale, and two inch totals are common in several Illinois counties.
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying spots. In urban areas ponding of water and backups where storm drains are blocked could also be imminent.
Should heavy rains persist or intensify today, a flash flood warning may need to be issued where flooding occurs.
A flash flood watch continues until midnight tonight for portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri through this evening, when rains should eventually taper off.
