An employee of Maple Grove Elementary School in Joppa was struck by a bullet on the school campus Friday afternoon.

A person at the Massac County Sheriff's Department says there was "one employee with minor injuries from an unknown source," but "all children are safe and accounted for."

A teacher at the scene told West Kentucky Star the incident occurred about 1 p.m. Once it was learned that the employee was injured, the school immediately went into lockdown. She said teachers were proud of the students for following instructions.

The Sheriff's Department said they don't believe the bullet was fired on campus, and they are currently investigating.

By 2 p.m., several buses arrived at the school, and at around 2:30 the children were transported off campus to property at Grand Chain and Portland Road, adjacent to Electric Energy Incorporated, where the children were picked up by waiting parents.
