Massac Semi Wreck Backs Up I-24 Traffic for Hours

I-24 was at least partially blocked for most of Friday near the Massac County/Johnson County line after a semi overturned and spilled its cargo.

Illinois State Police said a semi driven by 62-year-old Obbie Shackleford of Dallas, TX was eastbound at milepost 25 at 6:24 am when Shackleford reportedly fell asleep. The semi overturned across both lanes of the interstate and broke open, partially spilling its load of hand sanitizer. 

One eastbound lane remained closed until about 3:30 pm while police and crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic was backed up for several miles most of the day. At its peak, the backup of vehicles extended from a mile north of New Columbia almost all the way back to the Vienna exit.

No one was hurt in the crash. Shackleford was cited for improper lane usage.
