Pope County Crash Leaves Three Dead, Eight Injured

A two-vehicle head-on collision early Sunday morning in southern Illinois left three people dead and eight injured.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 3:30 am on IL 34 in Pope County. Police said a car crossed the center line and struck a limousine head on.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the nine limousine passengers was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The other eight passengers were transported to regional hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Police have not released the names of those killed or injured.

Route 34 was closed for approximately six hours for investigation and cleanup.
