A team of staff, faculty and students at SIU Carbondale has renewed a contract to provide another batch of a key ingredient used in COVID-19 test kits.

According to SIU News, the initial contract with state health officials was fulfilled last week, with a total of 40,000 vials of Viral Transport Medium (VTM) delivered. The university says another batch of at least 40,000 vials has been requested.

After a sample is obtained, VTM preserves the DNA of the virus until it can be tested.

SIU joined the battle against COVID-19 in early April, when state leaders asked universities for help with the supply of VTM, and the need for continued testing remains high.
