Shawnee Community College has recently reopened the veterans resource room on the main campus in Ullin. The resource room was recently renovated using funds provided by a grant made available through the Illinois lottery. Shawnee College has a long history of supporting veterans, and this grant opportunity provided the institution with additional funds to help student veterans navigate the process of job placement and benefits research.
Since 2006 The Illinois Veterans Cash Grant has allowed over 300 organizations to share approximately 13 million dollars in funding from the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. Shawnee Community College was awarded $35,700 last year. The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Committee reviews applications annually and awards grants to groups that help address issues such as Health insurance costs, Long-term care, post-traumatic stress disorder research or treatment, disability benefits, homelessness, and job placement and training.
In addition to the computers and study table areas made available for student veterans, the college intends to use the remaining grant funds to continue efforts for providing in-person seminars and webinar opportunities designed to assist veterans with continuing their education or entering the workforce.
Shawnee Community College is proud to serve our local veterans and is committed to their success. Enrollment is going on now for the Fall semester. For additional information call 618-634-3200 or visit shawneecc.edu.
