Superman Celebration Canceled

METROPOLIS - The 42nd Superman Celebration in Metropolis has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

According to a press release on Thursday, the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce, in agreement with the the Greater Metropolis Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City of Metropolis has made the decision to cancel the event.

The release goes on to say the following:

"This was an extremely hard decision to make, and many variables were considered. The Chamber's primary concern is and always will be the safety of their visitors and guests. At this point, the Chamber simply could not guarantee this, nor do they know if restrictions of large gatherings will be lifted by that time.

The Chamber also had to make this decision based on the business climate today. The Superman Celebration is the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce's primary fundraiser. Many non-refundable payments would need to be made now, which if the Chamber were forced to cancel at a later date, would put a financial burden on the Chamber of Commerce. The event is also primarily sponsored by local businesses. Knowing that Metropolis businesses are primarily locally owned and have gone into an extremely unforseen hardship, the Chamber would not expect them to have the discretionary income to support this event at the previous level.

The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce hopes that you understand this decision and make plans now to be at the 2021 Superman Celebration which will return bigger and better than ever!"

Each year, thousands of people attend the Superman Celebration. It is one of the area's largest and most eagerly anticipated events, and brings in people from all over the world.
