Thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern Illinois and parts of southeast Missouri late this afternoon or evening, then possibly across the remainder of our region tonight.

The highest risk of severe storms is north and west of a Cape Girardeau Missouri to Evansville line, mainly after 5 pm.

A few storms may contain large hail and damaging winds. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Very heavy rainfall may produce isolated flash flooding.

Meanwhile, oppressive humidity levels will return to the western half of the region today. Heat index values will reach 100 to 105 during the afternoon hours across southeast Missouri, parts of southern Illinois, and far western Kentucky.

An extended period of widespread heat and humidity is in store through early next week, with daily heat index readings topping out in the 100 to 105 range.
