During Governor Andy Beshear's Monday update, he announced a new campaign to promote mask use across the Commonwealth.

Beshear shared that July was a tough month, with the largest number of overall positive cases yet. He says this will lead to some negative ramifications in August.

He said, "We find we often lose Kentuckians several weeks after they test positive. That means we are likely to have a larger number of deaths in August."

Although this may be the case, Beshear says there is still reason for optimism.

"The numbers are telling us that facial coverings and masks are working," he said. "We were facing what looked like exponential growth. In order to see our cases go down, we had to slow the increase. That's why the mask mandate was necessary. If we had done nothing, by now, we would have been seeing 1,000 new cases every day, but instead we are seeing the increase drop off."

In his effort to reinforce the effectiveness of masks, Beshear unveiled his MaskUpKY campaign, a new statewide public service campaign with the goal of encouraging the use of masks by everyone in the state. He also introduced a new hashtag - #MaskUpKY - to promote masks on social media.

Beshear announced 323 new cases of the virus on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in Kentucky to 31,508.

Additionally, he announced two new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 744. The new deaths include a 99-year-old man from Calloway County.

At least 8,335 Kentuckians have recovered.
