Beshear Closes Bars, Reduces Restaurant Capacity
By Easton Sanders
FRANKFORT - During his Monday update, Governor Andy Beshear announced that he has ordered bars to close and restaurants to reduce capacity.

Beginning on Tuesday, bars are ordered to close for two weeks and restaurants are being told to reduce capacity to 25 percent.

"This is going to hurt a lot of restaurants," Beshear continued, "but the White House's modeling shows that this is absolutely necessary to control the spread at this time where we either become the next Florida or we get it under control and save the lives of our people."

Additionally, he has recommended that school districts wait until late August to resume in-person classes.

He said, "Given that we're dealing with this potential surge and the ramifications it could have, lets remember that we're going to make it. We're going to get through this and we're going to get through this together, but it's going to require us to take some steps and to do what's necessary."

In a Sunday Facebook post, officials with the Kentucky Restaurant Association questioned why restaurant professionals weren't invited to the discussion after Beshear held a round table with health experts and business leaders on Sunday.

The post said, "The Governor, health experts and business leaders are at the Governor's Mansion today. One of the "things they'll announce tomorrow" is possibly reducing restaurant capacity to 25%. Why weren't restaurant professionals invited to the discussion about their businesses? We are tired of being kept out of the conversation when we're desperately trying to stay in business. Restaurants are not the problem, Governor Beshear."

There are 522 new cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, bringing the total number of cases across Kentucky to 27,601. Beshear announced nine new deaths related to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to 709. The new deaths include a 61-year-old man from Livingston County.

At least 7,466 Kentuckians have recovered.
