A central Kentucky highway has been dedicated to a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan.
Family and friends of 1st. Lt. Eric D. Yates gathered in his hometown of Rineyville to honor the soldier by adding his name to a portion of Kentucky 1538.
Yates, who grew up on the road, died while serving his country in 2010. His mother, Kathy Yates, told those who attended the dedication ceremony Friday that she was grateful for the show of appreciation.
The News-Enterprise reports two signs were posted designating the road as 1st. Lt. Eric D. Yates Memorial Highway.
State Sen. Dennis Parrett, who sponsored the effort, said it was "an honor" to do something in memory of a local soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country and freedom.
