KYTN reports that a “Heroes Tribute Gala” was held Saturday night, which honored fallen police, fire and EMS individuals from over the past year in Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri.
Officer Rodney Smith died on March 2, 2018, when his patrol car was swept away by Mississippi River backwater.
Hickman Police Chief Tony Grogan said the gala is an annual fundraising event, which helps support the needs of families that have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
With last Saturday being the first anniversary of Officer Smith losing his life on duty, Chief Grogan said that the loss still impacts the department, and it deeply affects them. He said, "we all pulled together the best we could, and worked through it."
Chief Grogan also said that Officer Smith's name will be placed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial wall, in Washington, DC, in the near future.
