Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is endorsing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for re-election to a sixth term in Kentucky.

Huckabee announced the endorsement on Thursday, saying nobody has been more effective than McConnell in opposing President Barack Obama and his allies.

McConnell faces opposition in next year's Republican primary from Louisville businessman Matt Bevin who's running as a political outsider.

Huckabee said McConnell has stood for conservative principles and for the people of Kentucky. Huckabee said McConnell should be re-elected despite the best efforts of political foes who, he said, will "stop at nothing to take him out."

The winner of the GOP primary will likely face Democratic front-runner Alison Grimes, Kentucky's secretary of state, in the 2014 general election.
