Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is warning Kentucky businesses about suspicious callers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.

According to a press release, business owners around Kentucky have reported receiving phone calls from the number 301-909-4956 alleging that the business owes back taxes and threatening action if immediate payment is not made. Business owners have also reportedly received voicemails referencing a “time-sensitive matter” and urging them to return the call before action is taken against them.

“There are several red flags businesses should be aware of this tax season,” Grimes said. "First, the IRS typically contacts taxpayers by mail, not phone. In addition, the IRS does not ask for credit card numbers over the phone or request payment via prepaid debit card or wire transfer. As always, businesses should be vigilant and be wary of any unknown or suspicious entity that asks for payment or information.”
