Kentucky residents will soon be able to get REAL ID compliant driver's licenses and identification, as the state prepares to rollout the new cards.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the new cards are slated to become available gradually in counties beginning in March 2019 through spring. Applicants requesting a new Voluntary Travel ID or those applying for a license, permit or personal ID for the first time must present documentation verifying identity, social security number and residency.

Kentuckians are urged to prepare now by gathering documentation and making any necessary updates.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 is an Act of Congress that modifies U.S. federal law pertaining to security, authentication, and issuance procedures standards for state driver's licenses and identity documents.
