The Louisville Zoo has a new baby zebra for the first time in 13 years.
The Courier-Journal reports the zoo's Morena gave birth to the 72-pound foal on Jan. 18.
Zoo officials said the female foal took her first steps and began nursing soon after she was born. Both mother and foal are doing well. She will be on exhibit in the coming weeks and there will be a naming contest in the spring.
The foal is a Hartmann's mountain zebra, which are listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The birth was planned as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival plan that is designed to strengthen the gene pool.
