Dorothy “Tommie” Harper, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on August 1, 1928, in McCracken County, Kentucky, Tommie lived a life marked by strength, grit, and a deep love for the simple joys of nature and home.
Tommie’s tireless work ethic and tenacious spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her. In her younger years, she worked at Sears and Magnavox. However, her favorite work was often found in her home-whether mowing the lawn, rooting and planting flowers in her garden beds, restoring furniture, collecting antiques, or fixing things with her own two hands. She believed in doing things right and doing them herself.
A woman of faith, Tommie was a member of Lebanon Methodist Church; the church her father built. She was especially proud and deeply grateful to have lived long enough to witness all seven of her great-grandchildren come to know and accept Christ.
Tommie had a gift for storytelling and a playful sense of humor that made everyone feel at ease. Whether she was sharing tales from her younger days-including her time as a stock car driver-or offering up a witty observation, she always brought laughter and life to those around her. She loved the stillness of the lake, the beauty of wildlife, and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Affectionately known as Meemaw, her love and guidance shaped five generations, and her legacy will live on in the memories, laughter, and stories passed down by those who knew her best.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Jerry) Hyde of Paducah; three grandchildren, Jeff (Lori) Hyde of Lone Oak, Jarrod (Kim) Hyde of Reidland, and Joni (Steve) Bassett of Eddyville; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob Hyde, Cate Hyde, Cora Bassett, Ethan Hyde, Ella Bassett, Mallory Hyde, and Mia Bassett; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dale M. Harper; her parents, Dewie Dellen Bean and Cordelia Goad Bean; her sister, Virginia Yarbrough and brother-in-law, Ernest Yarbrough; and her brother, Troy Bean and sister-in-law, Eva Bean.
A private family chapel service will be held Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, with Bro. Rob Ison officiating. There will be no visitation.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Reidland Baptist Church, 5559 Benton Road, Paducah, Kentucky 42003.
