Murray | Oct. 10, 1935 | Apr. 26, 2024
Allegra Jones, 88, of Murray, passed away on April 26, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born on October 10, 1935, and was preceded in death by her parents, Holman and Treva Jones, and her sister, Georgia Harrell. She is survived by her brother, Guinn Jones and wife, Diana, of Murray, seven nieces and nephews, 11 great-nieces and nephews, and one great-grand niece.

In her early life, her father’s work with the State Health Department prompted the family to move from the Murray area to Washington, DC, Louisville, and Hopkinsville before returning to Murray.  Allegra graduated from Murray High School before earning a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Murray State University.

She began her career as a Second Grade Teacher at Clay Elementary School in Owensboro. While teaching, she continued her own studies in the evening to earn a Master's Degree in Library Science from Murray State University. She was the first Librarian hired at Andrew Jackson Elementary School, later renamed Dove Anna McNabb Elementary School in Paducah, where she remained for 24 years until retiring, having devoted 32 years to elementary education.

Her heart for teaching carried through in her personal life as she often shared activities with her nieces and nephews. They fondly remember craft projects, picnics at Kentucky Lake, trips to the playground, greatly anticipated visits to the Dairy Queen, and even vacations with Allegra, lovingly known by the younger generations as “Wee Wee". She loved family potlucks on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas when all her extended family members came together

She led a full and happy life, making the most out of each day. An avid traveler, she found great pleasures in experiencing new and different cultures and sights around the world and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. Her adventures led her to Canada, Mexico, 49 US states, and 11 European countries.

She was a gregarious person with a zest for life, friends, and family. Whether meeting to play cards, Scrabble, or Trivial Pursuit, dining at a favorite restaurant, or going on shopping trips or vacations together, Allegra was a pleasure to spend time with.

Allegra had a thoughtful and kind spirit and truly cared about others. She appreciated her wonderful family and devoted friends who kept in touch with her through the years. She was a faithful and devoted church member throughout her life; a member of Lone Oak Church of Christ in Paducah and later of Glendale Road Church of Christ in Murray. She said that she tried each day to read her bible, do something for someone else, smile and be kind.

She was a member of the McCracken County Retired Teachers Association and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and a Red Cross Volunteer. In her later years, she found new friendships in her community at Hickory Woods Assisted Living Center in Murray where, at the time of her passing, she was the longest-tenured resident, having lived there 12 years.
