Bobby Gene Miller, 80, Benton, KY died on July 21, 2019 at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN where he was attending a convention with his wife, Jane. Miller was born on February 13, 1939 in Hardin, KY. He was the sixth of eight children of L.O. and Pansy Miller. While his father worked on the railroad and his mother managed a family of ten, Miller, his brothers and their friends spent their days riding bicycles to the Old Iron Bridge, swapping stories and playing pickup basketball. Miller graduated from South Marshall High School in 1957 and was in the first graduating class after the consolidation of Hardin and Brewers High School. He attended Murray State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1961 and his Master of Education and Administration in 1964. Miller devoted his career to education as a coach, teacher, principal, and school administrator. He was the first principal at Marshall County High School, opening the school in 1975. He served as principal for 10 years before moving on to Central Office as the director of finance. Miller became superintendent of Graves County Schools in 1988, where he served until he retired in 2000. In 1994 he was honored as Kentucky’s Superintendent of the Year, and he served as the President of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents from 1995-1997. At retirement, he had proudly contributed nearly four decades to education. Miller was an active member of A?KA Men’s Association. Four of his best golfing buddies in this organization as he and Jane traveled were Sherrill Carroll, Joe Allen, Sam Wyrosdick, and John Lawrence. During the past week, they had played three days in Wisconsin and Minneapolis. Bobby Miller was a devoted and beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was married to his wife, Jane for more than 58 years, and together they enjoyed spending time in the garden, relaxing on the farm, traveling, and most of all, spending time with their five granddaughters. Miller was an avid golfer and cherished his tee times and golfing buddies at the Benton Golf and Country Club. He was an active member and volunteer with the United Methodist Church, where he spent many years as a Sunday School teacher and served on many district and conference committees. He is a member of Church Grove United Methodist Church and has attended Benton First United Methodist Church for the past three years.
