Vernon Dell Burnett, age 96, of Benton, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2019 at Baptist Health Paducah.

Vernon was born in Marshall County on May 1, 1923.  He was of the Baptist faith and the oldest member of Vanzora Baptist Church in Benton.  Vernon was a Corporal in the United States Army and served honorably in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. 

Vernon loved his family and all of his friends.  He was a “jack of all trades” and would help anyone with anything.  He will also be remembered as a big story teller.  Vernon spent his free time raising and training beagles for rabbit hunting and was an active member of the Jackson Purchase Beagle Club in Graves County Kentucky.  He also enjoyed his time raising cattle on his farm. 

Vernon is survived by one daughter, Dawn Stephens and husband, Tommy Sand, Jr.; one son, Vernon Burnett, Jr. and wife, Mary; one sister, Daisy Durham; five grandchildren, Angie Young, Seth Young, David Burnett, Matthew Burnett and wife, Sara and Michelle Gladden and husband, Nathan; 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Esther Painter Burnett; his parents, William Amp and Minnie Moody Burnett; two sisters, Mary Stringer and Henri Jo Davis; three brothers, Lee Burnett, Oather Burnett and Buster Clark; one grandson, Kevin Young

Funeral services for Vernon will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Filbeck-Cann Funeral Home of Milner & Orr with Bro. Mike Farmer and Bro. Butch Watts officiating.  Burial will follow with Military Honors at Benton City Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2019 at the funeral home.
