Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino announced Wednesday that freshman quarterback Reggie Bonnafon will start Friday at Syracuse, with sophomore Will Gardner potentially ready to play after missing last week’s game against Wake Forest with a left knee injury.

Gardner started the first four games for the Cardinals (4-1, 2-1 ACC) before suffering the knee injury in a Sept. 20 game at Florida International.

Bonnafon made his first career start in last week's 20-10 win against Wake Forest, passing for 206 yards while rushing 14 times for 46 yards. Bonnafon didn’t throw an interception or a touchdown but did lose two fumbles and was sacked four times by the Demon Deacons.

Gardner has completed 63 of 112 passes for the Cardinals, throwing for 798 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Both interceptions came in a Sept. 13 loss at Virginia.

Bonnafon is a more dangerous rusher than Gardner, and has 67 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in three games this season. He also played in relief of Gardner against Murray State and Virginia.
