Murray State Sophomore Alexa Becker was named as a Capital One Academic All-American on Thursday, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Becker, who was chosen to the third team, is the first Academic All-America selection in the brief four-year history of the Murray State softball program.
Becker, a native of Breese, IL, turned in a stellar sophomore season in which she helped lead the Racers to a second consecutive third-place finish at this year’s OVC tournament. The All-OVC selection batted a team high .311 this season and led the Racers in runs with 33, home runs with 12 and RBIs with 32. She also led MSU with a .589 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base percentage. Off the field, the business administration major was equally impressive as she currently has a 3.96 grade point average.
Becker is now the 14th Academic All-American in school history, marking the 15th time that a Racer has earned the prestigious honor. In addition to being the first Academic All-American in MSU softball history, she was also just one of two OVC softball players to earn one of the coveted 33 spots this season. UT Martin’s Leah Taylor also earned the honor this year, marking her second straight season to do so.
