The winningest football coach in Marshall County High School history passed away over the weekend. Jim Shelton suffered a heart attack while visiting family in Chattanooga, TN on Saturday. He was later pronounced dead at Erlanger Hospital. He was 62.

Shelton served as assistant football coach at MCHS from 1974-1989. He took over as head coach in 1990 and coached until 2000. As head coach, Shelton had a record of 78-50 and guided the Marshals to two district championships, two district runner-up finishes and one regional championship.

Shelton also served as Marshall County’s head baseball coach from 1978-1991. He is set to be inducted into the Marshall County Athletics Hall of Fame this fall.

Collier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Monday. A memorial service will be at Benton First United Methodist Church at 11 am Tuesday.
