In a game that mattered, the Marshall County Marshals took full advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses. The Marshals celebrated the 75-70 victory over Paducah Tilghman High School on Tuesday night at Reed Conder Gymnasium.
Tilghman (11-6) quickly took the lead in the first quarter leaving Marshall (8-9) to trail 20-14. Despite the early deficit, the gymnasium roared with electricity from the Marshals student section. Junior Zion Harmon and senior Tyler Stokes helped their team chip away at their opponents lead by halftime, leaving the floor to reevaluate their plan of execution with a five-point deficit.
In the third quarter, the Marshals faced their opponent head on and took the lead. The quarter began to look as if the two teams were playing cat and mouse – neither allowing the other to increase the score by two or more points. The game of cat and mouse would end by the fourth quarter with Marshall increasing their lead by 10 points.
Both teams took advantage of personal fouls as the game trekked on, minutes counting down as rally cries echoed throughout the gym. The Blue Tornado called a timeout at 5:33 in hopes of breaking their opponent’s momentum – which worked in their favor, allowing them to come back within five points with less than a minute to go in the game.
Senior Tyler Powell scored his 1,000th career point as a Marshal, while Stokes and Harmon stole the show by scoring a combined total of 52 points. Harmon finished his night with 29 points, Stokes with 23, Powell with 16 and senior Bryce Flatt with five.
Paducah Tilghman senior Jahiem Concentine finished his night with 19 points, senior Michael Laster with 12, sophomore Mian Shaw with 11, junior Eli Brown with 11, and sophomore Troy Williams with six.
Marshall County will host Graves County while Paducah Tilghman will host McCracken County at Otis Dinning Gymnasium on Friday night.
