On Valentine's night something seemed to be in the air, or maybe it was in the water. Whatever it was seemed to spread to several gyms across the region.

Friday night featured big games and several players stepping up big for their team. Here are a few of the highlights.

In girls basketball

In the district win over the Mayfield Lady Cardinals it was a dynamic duo from Graves that led the charge as the Lady Eagles got a dynamic All Region performance from both Raychel Mathis and Callie Jackson. Mathis had 22 and Jackson 21 to help Graves claim the top seed in the district tournament with its 64-31 win.

Over in Calloway County it may have been a 59-43 loss to Marshall County for the Lady Lakers but not without a monster effort from player of the year candidate Charles Settle. Settle's night was ridiculous as she finished with 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. That's right she had 31 of her team's 43.

In the win over Calloway the Lady Marshals secured the top spot in the district thanks to 21 from Cayson Connor, who has been on a whole new level since December. Jada Driver finished with 19 to top off one of her best games this season.

Boys basketball

On the boys side no performance may have been more important to the team than Seth Thomas for Graves County. Thomas led the Eagles with 27 on the road against archrival Mayfield to give Graves the top seed in the district with its 59-52 win

Over at McCracken County it was Jackson Sivills being Jackson Sivills leading his team with and a balanced mustang attack with 24 points to beat their arch rival Paducah Tilghman 84-55, also giving McCracken the top seed in the district. And don't discount Ronnie Jones who had 21, continuing to show just how far he has come this season.

But the biggest performance of the night came in the biggest single game performance in Marshall County school history as Zion Harmon finished with 50 in the Marshals loss to Calloway County. That's a new school record for a single game, which topped the old record of 47 set nearly 14 years ago.

So whatever it was Friday night here is hoping for more, because it sure was fun.

** Note there were certainly other great performances Friday but not all stats were available for the writing of this article. For more on these games and those other top performances be sure to listen to The Region 1 Sports Report on Monday.
