The McCracken County Mustangs won the Region 1 Soccer Championship in just their fourth year of existence, but the season came to an end Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to South Warren in the opening round of the KHSAA Boys State Soccer Tournament.

The Spartans had an advantage in the height department, but it was McCracken County who was the more physical team early on. The Mustangs nearly struck first as Jaxon Allard received a corner kick in the box, but his shot sailed just over the goal.

The Spartans struck first with 3:07 left in the first period as Poday Htoo scored off a cross pass.

Mustangs senior Jack Knowles was able to get a shot on goal early in the second half only to sail just wide. A handball allowed South Warren’s Fahrudin Dervisevic to score on a penalty shot to make it 2-0 South Warren.

South Warren would cap off the scoring with 14 minutes left as Matthew Bohnlein scored on a penalty shot to make it 3-0.

The Mustangs finish the season with a 14-11 record including the First District Championship and Region 1 Championship.
