Monday was a great day as we awarded another Teacher of the Month at Murray Elementary School. Special Education Teacher Mahaila Rickman is the West Kentucky Star October Teacher of the Month.
While Mrs. Rickman is a first year, moderate to severe special ed teacher for K – 3rd grades, she is no stranger to the staff and students. She was an aide for the last 3 years so she knows her position well! And while she loves art: photography and ceramics, she uses her skills to help her students; she was busy cutting out a turkey when she was called to receive her award! When asked how she wants her students to remember her, she replied “I just hope they always thought I was fun. And that we weren’t always working all the time.”
Teachers are such valued members of our communities and their families are always quick to help celebrate. Mrs. Rickman’s in-laws, husband and two sons joined the staff to present flowers and balloons. We even learned that Leon will attend Murray's new elementary school next because he "can see it from [his] house."
West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Month, sponsored by Scott Walker Construction, is awarded each month of the school year. As the October winner, Mrs. Rickman will join the future awardees this school year for the West Kentucky Star Teacher of the Year 2025 – 2026. Each teacher’s school receives a yard sign to show that a “Teacher of the Month Works Here.” It’s a great addition to the school entrances and a way schools can show off their winning teacher! Also, thanks to our sponsor, all monthly winners receive $75!
